Coastal waters conform the first line of defense against climate change and the algae -more specifically, intertidal fucoids- are our pawns. These magnificient organisms warn us about the effects derived from high temperatures -e.g.: by creating defense mechanisms against increasingly active herbivores-. Only by knowing ang protecting them we could ensure us a smooth transition to future times.

DNA is the molecule of life and can preserve for millions of years in ocean sediments. We use ancient DNA from sediment below the Arctic to learn which organisms lived in the past! The decline of sea-ice may mean changes to which organisms thrive in these ecosystems. Ancient DNA can help us understand how these ecosystems shifted during past sea-ice decline, as well as other Arctic Ocean secrets.

The National Center for Sustainable Subsurface Utilization of the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS2030) is one of three research centers within petroleum in Norway today. The University of Stavanger is hosting the center with the University of Bergen, IFE, and NORCE as research partners. NCS2030 is one of the largest research and industry consortia in Norway.
