Microbial Life Beneath the Ocean Floor

Deep down in the ocean, underneath the seafloor, life still continues. In this talk, I will highlight the astonishing capacity of microbes to thrive in the harshest environments with barely anything to live on. Discover their unique survival strategies and their role in deep-sea ecosystems.

Masters of the deep: unseen Arctic Fauna in extreme ecosystems

Despite the lack of sunlight and low food availability in the deep ocean, some ecosystems – like hydrothermal vents, cold seeps, and organic falls – host specialized animals fueled by a process called chemosynthesis. In my talk, I will take you to the Arctic chemosynthesis-based ecosystems, where animals have adapted to inhabit there, and show why this fauna is so special yet often overlooked!

Elucidating elusive animals

From undescribed ctenophores to benthic siphonophores, many marine animals are as unknown as they are fascinating. In this talk I would like to present some of my favorite deep sea species. The pictures that I will use come from the Schmidt Ocean Institute and Okeanos Redux. You can watch all of their divestreams on YouTube.
