Restoring kelp forests: a grass-roots approach
Rissa Citizen Science is committed to restoring kelp forests with volunteers. These
"Kelpers" are the lifeblood of this efforts and must be praised! Twice each month, they
gather, even in the Arctic winter when temperatures drop below zero and the sun has
disappeared. In 2025 alone, 455 volunteers joined Rissa's kelp restoration events at
Sørsjetéen, Telegrafbukta and Øksfjord. The initiative is part of the Ocean Green
project, which aims at scaling up the restoration of kelp forests.

Digging into the chemistry of mud
Mud is more than a smelly substance that we try to avoid. In the marine environment, the sediment holds a record of decomposition, it hosts microbial communities and larger benthic animals that rely on sinking particles for food and it is an important part of the carbon cycle. Together we will explore these processes in Canadian subarctic fjords and in an area that experienced a submarine landslide.
